Solar Power Lights the Way for Maternal Health in Nigeria
Complete video at: fora.tv Laura Stachel, co-founder of WE CARE Solar, demonstrates the impact of a basic solar-powered lighting system. Energy-efficient LED lights revolutionized the quality of care in a Nigerian maternity ward, where patients in need of emergency surgery had been turned away from care at night. —– In response to the need for reliable light and mobile communication in maternity hospitals and clinics in developing countries, WE CARE Solar has designed portable solar electric kits that fit in a suitcase-sized package. Brent Moellenberg and Lauren Stachel describe the conditions in medical facilities abroad and how these “solar suitcases” are being field tested in Nigeria and Haiti. – Maker Faire 2010 Laura Stachel is the co-founder and director of WE CARE Solar, and is a retired obstetrician-gynecologist who has been researching maternity care in Nigeria over the last two years. She is the Associate Director of Emergency Obstetric Research for the Bixby Center of Population Health and Sustainability at UC Berkeley and has been delivering solar suitcases to clinics for the last year.

@TomLandryHwy Well wouldn’t it be nice if every child was planned, loved and healthy? I for some reason doubt that “the women of Africa” are only concerned with getting off. All different types of people across the world have children they are incapable or unwilling to support. I can think of some prime examples in this part of the world.
@TheHappyHeathen Have sex all u want too. Don’t bring children into the world , just because u needed to get off..Bring them into the world because u want them and can give them so much,, i.e. an extension of your happines. But not even rabbits will reproduce in times of famine and disease, and we need to add mental disease to that biological response that has already been learned by so much time of biology on the Earth. Some idiots should not reproduce, especially at my and others expense.
@TomLandryHwy Because they shouldn’t be allowed to have sex or because they shouldn’t be allowed to have children?
@swinewarrior If you want to help out the women of Africa then you should invent a solar powered chassity belt.
If you want to help out the women of Africa then you should invent a solar powered chassity belt.
If you want to help about African American women then you should invent a solar powered chassity belt. Planned parenthood for Africa anyone?
Thank you for allowing another baby to be born into poverty. I am sure this helps the world somehow, right? Now if you just cure the sleeping sickness, AIDS, malaria and revolution that this baby will have to endure. But another mouth to feed is always a wonderful thing. Not even rabbits are stupid enough to give birth during times of famine. I would say that rabbits love their babies more than humans love theirs.

Excellent initiative – thanks for the hard work and heart to extend the benefits of your talents to those in need. I hope your programme is able to gain support from the Government and other stakeholders as required.
whilst the government has their children in switzerland or beverly hills. because they dont want to sort out electricity
Fewer maternal deaths? So, now more children can have their mothers? Can you imagine just how much this will positively impact their lives? These are the type of people and acts that change the world.
Very touching, but I stopped putting my trust in aid agencies long ago. The only way that universal public healthcare and decent living standards will be achieved in a place like Nigeria which is very rich in oil but very corrupt in government – is if the people unite and fight for it.
@anikinippon no, they cant. What you need to consider is the price of a power grid. Naturally – dense/important zones get wired while little villages do not.
this is where independent solar cells come in..they do not need to be plugged in.
Oh btw, I might be wrong about the grid – its a theory, but i dont know much about nigeria
great, more mouths to feed …..
just kidding ofcourse. Way to go!
Thats good they can see what they are doing when they cut a persons
hand off because off SHARIA law
One off the first country’s to do it surgicaly
@restlys they need to hook it up to that place then
@anikinippon they have nuclear power.
That’s cool but how much did the solar panels and led lights cost and how many years do they last? I’m sure if Nigeria had nuclear power, the whole country would be fine with their electricity needs.
very cool!
